The Indian team needs strong partnerships, which will help carry the team forward in the middle overs.

Talking about the partnerships, we will use this opportunity to look back at India’s top 5 partnerships in ODI World Cup.

List of India’s Top 5 Partnerships in ODI World Cup

The highest-ever partnership for India belonged to Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid, which was worth 318 runs for the second wicket and came against Sri Lanka during the 1999 ODI World Cup.

We have shortlisted five such partnerships. Let’s take a look at them on an individual basis.

No.1 – Sourav Ganguly-Rahul Dravid (318 runs vs Sri Lanka)

The match was played at Taunton during the 1999 ODI World Cup.

  • Sri Lanka had won the toss and opted to field first, and the decision backfired big time.
  • India had lost Sadagopan Ramesh early. But from here on, Ganguly and Dravid shared a mammoth stand. So huge was this stand that India had set a massive target of 373/6.
  • In reply, Sri Lanka were never in the game and went on to lose the match by 157 runs.

No.2 – Sourav Ganguly-Sachin Tendulkar (244 vs Namibia)

Ganguly featured in another big partnership for India, this time in the 2003 ODI World Cup.

  • The match, which was played in Pietermaritzburg, saw India post a mammoth 311/2.
  • Ganguly smashed 112 off 119, while Tendulkar slammed 152 as the duo shared a 244-run stand for the second wicket.
  • In reply, Namibia were all out for just 130, losing the match by 181 runs.

No.3 – Sachin Tendulkar-Rahul Dravid (237 runs vs Kenya)

Just like Ganguly, Dravid and Tendulkar have both been part of India’s long partnerships in the ODI World Cup.

  • Kenya had won the toss and opted to field first.
  • The decision seemed correct early on as India lost both openers, but after this point, Tendulkar (140) and Dravid (104) shared a stand worth 237 runs for the third wicket.
  • By the time they were done, India had posted a target of 325, which Kenya couldn’t chase down, losing the match by 94 runs.

No.4 – Virender Sehwag-Virat Kohli (203 runs vs Bangladesh)

This stand, which came in the opening game of the ODI World Cup 2011, saw India bat first.

  • Sehwag (175) and Kohli (100) combined for the third wicket for 203 runs, which gave India the final push they were looking for.
  • They eventually posted a target of 370/4, which Bangladesh couldn’t chase down and were restricted to 287/9.

No. 5 – Virender Sehwag-Sourav Ganguly (202 vs Bermuda)

The fifth-highest partnership for India at the ODI World Cup came during the 2007 ODI World Cup in the match against Bermuda.

  • India had a horrendous start to the ODI World Cup against Bangladesh, losing that opening match at the 2011 ODI World Cup.
  • Against Bermuda, India had a point to prove.
  • Bermuda had won the toss and opted to field, and the decision proved right, at least initially, as Robin Uthappa was out early.
  • But after this, Ganguly (89) and Sehwag (114) shared a 202-run stand for the second wicket, which propelled India to a massive 413/5.

Bermuda was never in the game. They eventually got all out for 156, losing the match by 257 runs.
