Afghanistan had a disappointing Asia Cup 2023, where they bowed out in the group stage. However, the fighting performance against Sri Lanka in the final group stage game indicates that the Afghan players won’t give up without a fight. In 15 World Cup matches, Afghanistan managed just one win. The Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side will be hoping to improve their numbers in the upcoming World Cup.

5 Afghanistan Players to Watch Out for in the World Cup 2023

The Afghanistan 15-member squad has many players who have produced quality performances over the years. It is a team with plenty of potential and fighting spirit. Here are five Afghanistan players to watch out for in India:

  1. Rahmanullah Gurbaz
  2. Ibrahim Zadran
  3. Mohammad Nabi
  4. Rashid Khan
  5. Mujeeb Ur Rahman

We look at the five Afghanistan players one by one:

Rahmanullah Gurbaz

The wicketkeeper-batter is one of the most talented white-ball cricketers to come out from Afghanistan recently. In a short period, Gurbaz, who made his debut in 2021, has amassed five hundreds in the 50-over format. Though he had a poor Asia Cup 2023 campaign, the 21-year-old is expected to be among the runs in the upcoming World Cup. Gurbaz recently struck a brilliant 151, his best score in ODI, against Pakistan in Hambantota.

Ibrahim Zadran

Gurbaz’s fellow opening batter, Ibrahim Zadran, is another player to watch out for in the Afghanistan jersey in the 2023 edition. Making his international debut at 18, Zadran has over 900 runs in ODI cricket at an average of 53. He has four hundreds and as many fifties in 19 ODI innings. Zadran and Gurbaz are the one of the most exciting opening duos in the World Cup.

Mohammad Nabi

The Loger-born cricketer is the most experienced player in the Afghanistan World Cup squad. Mohammad Nabi, who will turn 39 in January 2024, is a vital cog, as he can be a match-winner with the bat and ball. The biggest example was the Asia Cup 2023 fixture against Sri Lanka. After his economical spell with the ball, Nabi struck a thunderous 65, which took Afghanistan close to one of the greatest ODI wins.

Rashid Khan

The Afghan spin king will look to make a massive impact in spin-friendly conditions in the World Cup. He might have had a poor outing in the Asia Cup, but Rashid Khan, a familiar face in global T20 franchise leagues, is Afghanistan’s numero uno spinner in the 50-over mega event. With six years of IPL experience under his belt, the leg-spinner is a big threat for batters in the upcoming World Cup.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman

The off-spinner is another exciting player in the Afghanistan 15-member World Cup squad. Like Rashid, Mujeeb struggled to make an impact in the Asia Cup. However, he has been one of Afghanistan’s mainstays in white-ball cricket since his debut in 2017. The 22-year-old has 93 ODI wickets in 65 ODI innings. He has an excellent record in India, taking 12 wickets in seven innings at an economy of 3.73.

Concluding Thoughts

Afghanistan has a squad that has several talented and experienced players. If the likes of Nabi, Rashid, Gurban, and Zadran perform consistently, they can cause a few big upsets in the upcoming World Cup in India. Afghanistan fans back home will be eagerly waiting for that.
